Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary - situated between McGregor and Robertson in the Western Cape - provides a permanent refuge for abused, neglected and elderly donkeys. Here they are given the opportunity to live out their lives with respect and dignity, surrounded by their own kind, in a protective and natural environment.

Eseltjiesrus are 15kms from Robertson. Watch for the direction signs as you approach Tanagra Winery. They are open Thursdays to Sundays from 10am till 4pm.

Here you will find a restaurant (serving light meals), shop (donkey items, wine and books) and lovely walks in a tranquil setting. You can visit the donkeys with one of the Visitor Guides who will explain our work and tell you more about the donkeys that live here. Entrance is by donation.

History: Hansie and Grietjie (Hansel and Gretel)

In August 2015 we were asked to investigate two young donkeys living on a wine farm near Cape Town. When we drove around the farm looking for the donkeys, none of the farm workers that we asked knew that there were donkeys on the farm. Eventually we found them in in a tiny enclosure deep in a forest of trees and were appalled by the conditions.

The sun never reached them under the trees and they were standing in deep mud and filth. There was a shelter made up of a roof suspended by four poles, against the side of a building. There was no grass to eat and the water provided for drinking was green with slime. The donkeys were covered in mud and their hooves were overgrown and probably infected with fungus from the wet conditions. They were very friendly and came to the fence to see us, as they obviously craved attention.

With difficulty we arranged for the donkeys to be confiscated and after a few weeks they were brought to Eseltjiesrus. They went into a reception area where they stayed while we made sure that they were healthy, free of parasites, and they learned to accept handling and care from our staff. They learned to enjoy being brushed, have their eyes and feet cleaned, hooves trimmed by the farrier, and to accept humans as being kind and loving. They also learned not to push, barge or kick at people. These behaviours are natural for young donkeys when they play, but are not safe for the humans handling them.

Hansie and Grietjie love their new home: they play wild games, galloping around the fields and storming up to any people who come into their space. After some weeks we felt that they had learned good manners and we slowly integrated them with the other donkeys, introducing a few at a time so that they made friends gradually. We also have to be sure that they are safe for visitors to interact with. They bring a joyful feeling to the herd at the Sanctuary, showing us how heathy young donkeys enjoy life.

They make visitors conscious of the friendly and trusting nature of these wonderful animals, so that abused and suffering donkeys elsewhere can be helped through our outreach work and public awareness.

News: Hansie and Grietjie

Hansel and Gretel are enjoying life at Eseltjiesrus. They have not lost any of their youthful energy. Healthy young donkeys are very playful and curious. Hansel has discovered that he can tip over and play with the irrigation sprinklers in the fields. This gives him great pleasure and our Site staff just smile and reposition the sprinklers. Boys will be boys!

If they had been working donkeys in a poor community they would by now probably be tired, overworked, underfed and facing health challenges like parasite infestations. How lucky they were to be spotted and rescued. Even though they had been kept as pets, once the interest in them wore off they could well have been sold as working donkeys. The lifespan of working donkeys in poor communities is about 10 years. They should ideally not start working before 4 or 5 years of age. Unfortunately poor owners cannot afford to care for an animal for that length of time if it is not working productively. This
also accounts for the shortened life expectation of working donkeys – starting work before the body has matured.

Thank you for enabling us to give them a happy for-ever home.
